The latest nutritional database
July 20th, 2001
The USDA has just released the latest version of it's nutritional information database, SR14. The database includes over 6,000 items, slightly less than the previous version, SR13. The new database includes amino acid data, additional categorization of sugars, more vitamin analysis and caffeine.
We have incorporated the new changes into our online Carbohydrate Counter, an optimized version of the USDA database. It features additional functionalities such as sorting the results based on search criteria (carb-count, ECC, protein or fibre) in ascending or descending order. Search by name or list by food category, and serving-size changes. This is a valuable tool for low-carbers, particularly for beginners.
The data has been used as well to calibrate the accuracy of our Hidden Carbs Inspector. Most hidden carbs calculations assume that carbohydrates has 4 calories per gram, which is not the case!
For additional information on the data sources, visit the USDA site.

"I'm starting up this business with the express purpose of making quality, high-demand Low Carbohydrate and Low Glycemic products available to Canadians, and at competitive Canadian prices. Saskatoon restaurant serves pies w/ Splenda!
Sep 24, 2000: Crystal from Saskatoon writes:
"I just discovered something awesome - my husband and I went to the Berry Barn, it's a Saskatoon tourist attraction that has a resturant and gift shop all dedicated to our wonderful namesake berry, the Saskatoon Berry, and on the menu in the resturant they have Saskatoon Berry pie sweetened with Splenda!!! It was right there prominently listed below the regular one!! It's still a wheat crust and probably higher in carbs than what you coud make at home because who knows what they thicken it with, but I had a piece and ate the insides - and for an *occasional* treat it's nice to be able to eat dessert in a resturant for a change (come to think of it I have *never* eaten dessert in a resturant since I started this WOE over 2 1/2 year ago!) I just think it's awesome that they have it and give people a choice, hopefully more resturants will follow suit."
